Harry Potter is the most financially successfull franchise ever, even outselling James Bond. The Philosophers Stone is currently the sixth highest grossing film of all time, grossing over $974, 733, 550.
The film is about a young boy named Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), who one day finds himself entering a wizarding universe and enrolling at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He and his friends (Emma Watson & Rupert Grint) find themselves trying to save the school from the evil of Lord Voldemort.
The film brings a lot of attention to British tourism, although as the franchise grows it is becoming more americanised. The film is written by a British author, has a British cast, is set in British locations and also has a British producer. I think the films have created a lot of discomfort at them being called British films because they are high grossing, but this is just primarily down to fan bases (mugglenet.com).

So these 'British' films have been making lots of money for an American studio - that's where the budget came from and that's where the profits have been going - although it's absolutely right to place this as a British film in all sorts of other ways, of course, as you say.

Keep going - what do the reviews - positive and negative - say about it? You've said how much money it made, but how much did it cost to make? And how was it marketed? This is one of the few films mentioned so far where merchandising was a significant part of the marketing campaign, for example.

I agree. im starting to dislike how the americans are taking over everything now. they cant even leave CADBURYs alone! the film will lose its spirit of british children and a british school if continues to be commercialised.

Although, playing devil's advocate for a minute, you could argue that as it's American money paying for them all to be made they can do what they want with it - at least Rowling put conditions in the rights she sold to Warner Brothers that the films had to be made in Britiain with British actors and so on.

I'm interested in how exactly you think the films are being Americanised. Is it, in part, because the 'scope' of the books grew as the series went on so inevitably the films end up as high concept Hollywood blockbusters - that the books themselves are based around blockbuster ideas and the films are bound to follow that?
