This Is England.

I chose this film because i believe it shows english society down to a tee in the time it was set (1080s). I think the film has adapted the culture of skinheads and the social state of england at that time. There are about 3 different narrative threads in this film. Shaun, a naive young boy who's father died in the faulklands war, warms to a group of skinheads that take him under their wing. Combo, a racist that has just came out of prison and takes over most of the group, leading them into a direction that makes the leader "Woody" increasingly uncomfortable. The only black member of the group is the object of Combo's racist hatred these narratoves merge together to make part of the best of british movie.
I like this film, basically because its just so british, like typically british and Stephen Grahams performance is amazing.
This Is England was written and Directed by Shane Meadows, critics reported that it was his best piece of work yet (iAgree).

I dont believe this film has a specific audience apart from people who lived through the 80s and the many revolutions, people that were borjn in the 80s, or people that were just curious to find out how england was in those times. people that would be interested in this film would like to see how media would portray england , it is said that some viewers are in denial about society in the 80s and deny there was no racism at all as is shown in the film, and may not be able to handle some of the strong scenes shown in the film. The film is brutally honest about society and has a "take it or leave it" feel to it.

This Is England was nominated for several awards, like "Most Promising Newcomer", "Best Film", "Special Jury Award" and (iThinkThatsIt).

The row, regarding the certificate for This Is England is interesting to read about. I went onto The Guardian website where they blog about films and Writer and Director Shane Meadows says "My Film Has Been Landed With A Certificate Which Will Mean Those Who Need To See It Most Will Not Be Able To". i find this interesting as the certificate was 18, i thought that maybe there wasn't a specific target audience but apparently there was. Shane Meadows argued that his film was not just based in the 80s and had no value, he felt it was something that 15 year olds could cope with and was politically relevant the film was given an 18 certificate because of the realistic violence and racist language, but surely, this is an example of good film and realistic media instead of commercialising and butter coating what really went on in the 80s. Bristol City Council overturned the BBFCs decision to give it an 18 certificate and gave it a 15 certificate instead. Bristol council was the first to overturn the certificate and many other councils were expected to do the same arguing that the film was nothing different to what is seen on peak-time television on channel4, and that teenagers should see it because the film is a kind of shock tactic in showing them how cociety has changed. The BBFC argued their point by saying they awarded the film an 18 certificate because they were worried that teenagers would see the film in a context where they are not in a position to discuss the contemporary issues raised, and that some of the behaviour may come across as attractive rather than offensive.

Next... you can use IMDB to find out how much the film cost to make and how much money it made... and it might be interesting to compare this film with other Shane Meadows' films - I have a feeling this is his most succesful film, so comparing it with the others might allow you to think about why this did so well.
